Not-For-Profit Status

It's official, we are a registered Canadian Not-For-Profit. What does that mean? Now what?

It took me a long time to look at this in a positive frame.

Registering means:

  • Increased meetings

  • Increased paperwork

  • Added expenses

  • We don't pay income tax (doesn't apply to us currently)

  • Google says it will improve credibility (more on that later)

  • We can apply for funding/grants

  • We get to pay for insurance

The credibility part bothers me. Credibility is earned by what we have done and continue to do in the community, not by a number issued by the government.

Why did we do it then? We did it so that in a year, and $5,000.00 (if rates don't increase) later, we will be able to file for our charity status. Doing this, along with our registered not-for-profit status, opens up bigger doors for fundraising and issues receipts to donors.

So it's a long game.

No, as a not-for-profit, we cannot issue receipts for tax purposes, but registering as a not-for-profit is a significant step for us, and we are excited about it.

Stay tuned for all the information on our board members, officers, our bylaws, and other super boring stuff.
